Have you ever suffered from chronic back pain? Did your doctor confuse you with high-sounding medical terms? I underwent that harassment. You see, I was in marketing and sales for about 20 years. Extensive traveling and driving, coupled with bad roads, had taken their toll. I developed severe back pain, which was sometimes unbearable. I found it difficult to stand upright. Like anybody else, I consulted my physician. Again, like all doctors, he started with the usual medical descriptions that a lay person like me could not understand. He threatened me with dire consequences, if I chose to ignore the back pain, which I was not about to do.
Treatment For Chronic Back PainConsider these terms. 'Chronic low back pain,' 'chronic lower back pain,' 'chronic severe lower back pain,' 'chronic nonspecific lower back pain,' etc. They truly sound frightening. You might feel like it is the end of the world for you if one of these terms applies to you. I didn't feel that way when these terms did apply to me. In fact, I refused to be scared by such terms and I refuse to let any of these problems keep me from living everyday life. After my doctor finished his long sermon, I politely asked him to tell me how I could get rid of my back pain. I did not want this to be something that significantly hurt how happy I could be with my life.
My doctor started on a big lecture of things I should do to help ease the back pain I was experiencing.. Stop driving, take complete rest for about a week, try to get some sound sleep every night, reduce your intake of alcohol and cigarettes, (as if I was a total alcoholic and a chainsmoker), apply pain balm in the back, particularly at the lower back at regular intervals, take pain killers if the pain gets severe, etc. I was astounded at everything he said.. The back pain was quite acute and here the doctor was suggesting something like a homemade remedy. Of course, I followed his instructions rigorously and the back pain vanished in two weeks.
Chronic low back pain is the easiest to cure. It is usually caused by our normal day-to-day activities that put a lot of strain on the back. Even without our knowledge, we are exerting our back more than we realize. The pressure accumulates and one fine morning, it manifests as back pain. Avoiding or reducing the activities that are the cause for such back pain is the first step. Rest, regular medication for some time and mild exercises would put you back on the road in no time, fully fit again.
Chronic lower back pain is slightly more severe than chronic low back pain. Torn ligaments, muscle inflammation, etc could cause this type of back pain. Medication for a period of time, and physiotherapy, are recommended for such pain.
Chronic severe lower back pain could be the result of certain specific causes like disc herniation, sciatica, etc. In most cases, regular medication as prescribed by the doctor, physiotherapic exercises or yoga and rest for a few weeks with good sleep would cure you completely. Only in rare cases, surgery might be warranted for chronic severe lower back pain, but that is also a minor one only, not a major surgery.
Chronic back pain and cancer is something that has to be taken seriously. Spinal chord cancer or cervical cancer could first reveal itself as chronic severe lower back pain. A timely visit to the doctor would help in starting the standard cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy. With modern medical advancements, cancer is quite curable and need not cause concern.
